The first Saturday of every month members of the North Mankato American Legion Post 518 gather to pay a month-long tribute to a deceased veteran. This will take place at 10 a.m. October 7 for Wendell Edward Stark, former Elysian resident and father of Kelly Kauss of Elysian. The event is set for Wheeler Park in North Mankato.
At the request of the family, a veteran’s coffin flag is raised and flown for one month. A short tribute of the veteran is read and then placed in a display stand in the front of the flagpole.
At the next month’s ceremony, the flag is lowered, folded, and presented back to the family. The new honoree’s coffin flag will then be received from the new family, unfolded, and raised for the current month.
Wendell Edward Stark was born on June 9,1934 to Daney and Eva Stark in Darfur, Minnesota. He attended Darfur Primary and Comfrey High School.
He married Donna Theresa Berberich on June 22, 1957 in Comfrey, Minnesota. Their last place of residence was in Elysian, Minnesota.
Wendell made his living, working as an internal auditor for Hubbard Milling in Mankato, MGA Graphics as president and as a tax preparer at H&R Block. (He started out as a box boy at Piggly Wiggly in 1956)
He was a member of the St. Peter Chorale Society, Knights of Columbus, Elysian American Legion Post 311, and Sertoma Club.
