Emil “Max” Joseph Maxa, age 83, of Montgomery, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023 at his home in Montgomery. Celebration of Life at a later date.

Be it improbable or expected, St. Patrick is one of the final eight teams remaining in the Minnesota Baseball Association’s Class B state tournament after a 5-3 win Saturday, Aug. 26, in the round of 16.
The Irish topped Baseball 365, 5-3, in Delano. They’ll face the Minnetonka Millers Saturday, Sept. 2, 11 a.m., in Litchfield. Minnetonka. The Millers won Saturday, 8-0, over the Metro Knights. They took advantage of a dozen walks, four hits and three Knights' errors in the win.

As Labor Day will arrive this weekend, so does the expected “phase one” part of the Highway 13 project by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). This means the contractor should have the bulk of the work done from Lexington Avenue north and at the roundabout being constructed at County 28 and Highway 13 between New Prague and Montgomery.

What has turned into a large festival of yesteryear, the Le Sueur County Pioneer Power Show (LSCPPS) started out as a simple passion of one man 50 years ago in 1974. It’s still the passion of one man but it is now the passion of many, many people that share it with him. That man is Dave Preuhs.

The Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously August 15 to discontinue the county’s Home Health Care, citing a number of issues. The program will be phased out and is scheduled to end by November 1.
Home Care Supervisor Laura Guddal said, “Our commissioners decided that it’s time to close. There are six counties offering home care practitioners in the state now and there were nine at the beginning of the year.”

The Tri-City United boys soccer team defeated Fairmont, 5-1, Saturday, August 26 and lost a 3-1 contest to Southwest Minnesota Christian Monday August 28.

Students at Tri-City United Schools are going to be getting an education hands-on with solar energy due to a new 40kWh solar array installed at both the Le Center K-8 school and high school in Montgomery. The project has been a few years in the making with a long-term vision from Carl Menk, who has off-and-on served as the districts facilities director in addition to being the districts regular full-time technology director.

The Minnesota Baseball Association recognized the services of Eric Brever and Pat Goggins last month in St. Patrick with a pregame ceremony before the Irish faced Union Hill.

A gas leak was underway from late Monday morning at Highway 13 and Lexington Avenue in Montgomery. Firefighters and CenterPoint Energy said they should have it sealed up by early afternoon. Residents nearby the location are asked to keep their windows closed and away from the intersection until it has been fixed. Firefighters were monitoring gas levels regularly around the area for potential evacuations. See more in the August 31 edition of the Messenger.

New Prague, Montgomery, Waterville, Scott and Le Sueur counties and the area are under an excessive heat warning during the coming week.
The National Weather Service says the area will be subject to "dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110 (degrees) possible."

Lonsdale Community Day, Saturday, Aug. 12, was packed with activities for people to enjoy from the morning too the night.
“It was amazing,” said Shanna GutzkeKupp, executive director of the Lonsdale Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the celebration to bring the community together. “We had wonderful weather.”
Weather for the day had temperatures in the low 80s at the most and sun through the day.

When the state amateur baseball tournament convenes this weekend in Dassel, Delano, Litchfield and Waconia, the Dakota, Rice Scott League, a group including two favorites and a long shot to make the Class C state field will be well represented.
Class C teams Faribault, Union Hill and Veseli earned state berths at the region tournament which concluded last weekend.

There are three tractors in the shed at the Borgmeyer farm just east of the Le Sueur-Rice County line. Each one has a specific job, though the 1968 John Deere 4020’s role is only partially linked directly to farm work.
“It still runs the auger every fall, still pulls things every spring,” said Willie Borgmeyer. He farms 120 acres of corn and beans in Shieldsville Township in western Rice County.

Joan C. Hamlin, age 89, of Montgomery, passed away Sunday, August 6, 2023, at French Meadow Place in Le Sueur. Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 15 from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. with Funeral service to follow at 11 a.m., all at St. John Lutheran Church in Montgomery with Pastor Jason Pollington officiating. Interment will be held in the Bohemian Cemetery in Montgomery.

Steven David Moravec, age 67, of New Prague passed away on July 11, 2023 at his home.  A funeral service was held on August 5, 2023 at FaithPoint Lutheran Church in New Prague with Pastor Steve Trewartha officiating.

Hedwig “Hedi” Terisa Chlan, age 94, of Montgomery, passed away on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 21 from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., all held at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery with Fr. Tom Niehaus officiating. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Montgomery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Most Holy Redeemer Catholic School or Church.
