Marlene “Gussie” Emmers, 80, passed away on October 14, 2018, at Methodist Hospital after an eight-year battle with kidney failure and being on dialysis. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, from 9 to 10 a.m. with Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. all at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Le Center. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Le Center.
John Lawrence Fiala, 92, of Lincoln, NE, passed away September 27, 2018, in Omaha. Born on January 9, 1926, in Raymond to Jerome and Bessie (Kratochvil) Fiala. John, a US Navy veteran, worked in Claims as an administrator at State Farm Insurance for many years, retiring in 1989.
He was very proud of his Czech heritage and was a co-founder of the Miss Czech-Slovak US Pageant. He served in many different organizations: Czech Language Foundation, Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences, past president of the NE Czech's of the Panhandle, and NE Czech's Inc.
Julitta “Jule” Franke, 90, of Montgomery, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health System New Prague.
Funeral services will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 10 at 10 am. with visitation from 9 am to 10 am at the church. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 9 from 4 to 8 pm at Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Montgomery.
Millicent C. (Turek) Andrist, age 96, formerly of Erin Township, Minnesota, died Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at home surrounded by her family.
Her funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Beverly, Massachusetts on November 21, 2017.
Burial will take place at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Montgomery Minnesota at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2018. Family and friends are invited to the American Legion Post #79 at 12 p.m. in Montgomery for light refreshments and to celebrate Millicent’s life.
Elsie M. Lukes, age 91, of New Prague, died peacefully surrounded by her family at Mala Strana Rehabilitation Center on Tuesday, October 2, 2018. Elsie was born on April 3, 1927 in Lexington Township, Le Sueur County to Albert and Emma (Dvoracek) Holey. She was raised in the Le Center area and attended a country school in Lexington Township. She married Leonard R. Lukes on November 21, 1950 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in North Mankato. The couple started their life together in Mankato, where Elsie worked at Brett’s Department Store. They moved to St.
David Leonard Skluzacek, 61, of Montgomery, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018 at his home. Visitation will be on Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon with a prayer service to follow all at Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
David was born on May 18, 1957, in New Prague to James and Leonella (Simek) Skluzacek. He attended Saint John the Baptist Catholic School and Jordan High School. He was united in marriage to Pamela Soine at Vang Lutheran Church in May of 1990.
Gertrude “Gertie” Tuma, 93, of Montgomery, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, at Central Health Care in Le Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, Sept. 28 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery at 11 a.m. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Bohemian National Cemetery in rural Montgomery.
Gertie, daughter of James and Anna (Kotavy) Tuma, was born in Wheatland Township on February 18, 1925. She lived on the family farm until the age of twenty when she became a housekeeper for the Frank Turek and Joe Kaderlik families.
Evangeline “Vangie” Ann Burns, 88, of Tyrone Township died September 16, 2018. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, September 20, 2018, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church in St. Thomas. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018 at Kolden Funeral Home in Le Sueur and on Thursday until 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. A lunch will follow the services at St. Anne’s School in Le Sueur.
Thomas James Thornton, age 92, of Montgomery, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones in the early morning of Thursday, September 6, 2018 at Mayo Systems Hospital in New Prague. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 14, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 p.m. Father Victor Valencia will be officiating. Interment will be held at St. Thomas Cemetery in St. Thomas. Military Honors provided by the Montgomery area Veteran’s Honor Guard.
Mary Emily Steinhouse, age 85 of Montgomery, passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at her home. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 10, 2018 at St. John Lutheran Church in Montgomery from 9:30 a.m – 11:30 p.m. Celebration of Life will be held at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Jason Pollington officiating. Interment will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Montgomery.
Dale William Benson passed away on Friday, August 31, 2018 at the age of 59. Dale was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 15, 1959.
Dale was born to parents Elinore (Lynn) and William (Bill) Benson. He married Vicki Benson on August 11, 1979. They have two children: Son, Kaleb (Cassie) Benson and granddaughter, Kendra Benson; daughter, Krystle (Shawn) Bloch and grandsons, Viktor, Thor, and granddaughter, Vivian. Dale and Vicki lived in Montgomery, MN until Dale was diagnosed with cancer. After that time they moved to the hunting shack in McGrath, MN.
Helen Keogh, 89, of Montgomery, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018, at Mala Strana Health Care in New Prague.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery from 9 to 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Montgomery.

Richard L. Deutsch, age 86, of New Prague, died peacefully, in the presence of his loving family on Monday, August 27, 2018 at his home. Richard was born on May 17, 1932 in Helena Township, Scott County to John and Marie “Mary” (Wampach) Deutsch. He attended St. Benedict Parochial School and graduated from New Prague High School. He was drafted into the US Army and served in the Korean War and was one of six who typed up the armistice agreement for the end of the war. Richard married Phyllis M. Glisczinski on October 13, 1962 at St.
Kubes, Joseph John, age 78 of Webster, passed away unexpectedly on August 26, 2018 of natural causes. Survived by his wife, Emma; children, Laura (Bob) Smisek, Joe (Karen), John, and Jeff (Carrie); grandchildren, Anna, Bobby, Joey (Joy), Kaylee, Jeffrey, and Angie; siblings, Nancy (Joe) Trnka, Bob (Betty), and Roger (Joy); also by other loving relatives and friends. Father Victor Valencia will be officiating. Interment will be at St. John Catholic Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.
Donald J Budin, age 83, of Le Center, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018, at Le Center Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. with a KC service at 7:30 p.m.
