Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop used a powerful rushing attack to end the season for the WEM football team.
The Thunderbirds gained 364 yards on the ground and scored seven rushing touchdowns in a 62-12 Section 2A Quarterfinal win Tuesday, Nov. 17 in Winthrop.
GFW went on to win the Section 2A Championship by defeating Minnesota Valley Lutheran 40-21. The T-Birds scored 40 or more points in four of their seven games. They finished 4-3 overall.
WEM did not win a game this season and were only able to score four touchdowns in five games.

A number of WEM volleyball players had season-best performances during the team's ninth straight win.
The Bucs swept Maple River 25-13, 25-12, and 25-4 Thursday, Nov. 12.
Five juniors had great performances to help the Bucs to their ninth straight sweep of the season.

A trio of WEM bowlers claimed the top prize during the South Central Conference end-of-the-year tournament held Nov. 7 at Spare Time Bowl in Owatonna.
Sophomores Tytan Larson and Gabe Androli, and freshman Gavin Gohlike won the 3-person baker-style bowling tournament.
Baker-style bowling consists of bowlers taking turns rolling one frame at a time, one after another. Bowlers roll either three or four frames when bowling with three individuals. Teams can consist of up to five bowlers. WEM competed with the minimum of three.

The WEM football team scored its first points of the season in Janesville Friday, Nov. 6.
But the lone touchdown was all they would put on the board as the JWP Bulldogs won their first game of the season, down- ing WEM, 31-6.
Senior Kurtis Crosby blocked a Bulldog’s punt and senior Travis Van Houdt returned the ball 29 yards midway through the second quarter.
The score cut the JWP lead to 13-6 with 6:54 left in the third quarter.

Bucs are 7-0, have clinched at least tie for 3rd straight conference title
In a battle between two of the state’s top nine rated teams, the WEM volleyball team swept Medford Thursday, Oct. 29 in Waterville.
The Bucs entered the contest rated No. 2 in Class A while the Tigers were rated No. 9 in the most recent poll Oct. 26.
WEM picked up their sixth straight sweep of the season, downing Medford 25-14, 25-16, and 25-19.

Unfortunately, a COVID situation will require us to cancel our 10/30 varsity game vs Owatonna and our 11/6 varsity game at Mayo.  Our JV and 9th grade teams are not affected and will continue to play during that time.

The following applies to all indoor sports, concerts, plays, competitions, performances and any other similar events that have spectators. This guidance is specific to the events that will take place in a school building or facility where instruction takes place and include the following parameters:

The remainder of the Minnesota State High School League’s (MSHSL) activities calendar came into view Thursday, Oct. 1 during the Board of Directors meeting.
  After a presentation by the League’s Return to Participation Task Force, the Board of Directors approved a maximized winter activities season that trims 30 percent of the contest dates. By keeping the length of seasons generally intact, member schools will have the flexibility for rescheduling if contests are postponed because of COVID-19 related outbreaks or other interruptions.

For the first time in nearly a month, the WEM/JWP cross country teams were a full squad. Due to distance learning at JWP, WEM runners had been competing by themselves.
The full team competed Monday, Sept. 28 at Prairie Ridge Golf Course against NRHEG and RACE, a private school in Rochester.
The girls’ team finished second to RACE, scoring 40 points to 27 for the Jaguars. NRHEG did not field a complete team of five runners. Lauren Dimler placed third (22:38), Emma Johnson fourth (22:43), and Kwynn Krause sixth (23:25).

On Monday, the Minnesota State High School League board of directors voted to reinstate both the fall football and volleyball seasons this fall.
The decisions came after the league surveyed nearly 400 member schools, most of which wanted to have the seasons played out in the fall rather than a spring “flex season.”
Last month, the league postponed the football and volleyball seasons to spring due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. The league reconsidered the decision after hearing from athletes and families.

Rose Hollermann, daughter of John and Michele Collerman of Elysian, is currently playing wheelchair basketball in a men’s Champions League in Spain for the second year.
Hollermann recently graduated from the University of Texas, Arlington with a degree in Elementary Education Below are some of her thoughts from an interview on playing with the BSR Econy Gran Canaria team.

The Morristown Gun Club,located behind the Ahlman’sGun Store and Range, has been making improvements.
Not only are they making improvements, but they are open two times a week for the public to enjoy the facility.
According to Gun Club President Troy Marquardt, the club has been open since 1966.
According to the PULL USA magazine, the club has under-gone a number of changes since its opening.
The main club house was moved to a more centralized location behind the ranges.
A grant was recently received and a fourth trap house was added.

Trista Hering, a 2020 WEM graduate, finished off her outstanding high school softball career by pitching in the Senior Salute Sunday in Waterville. Hering, an All State selection, among 17 seniors of the Gopher and Valley Conference teams who played in the seven inning game, commemorating players who did not have a chance to play in the spring of 2020.

The Waterville Indians and Morristown Morries amateur baseball teams will begin their quests to make a repeat appearance in the Class C State Tournament this weekend. After finishing up an abbreviated 13-60 League schedule, the two teams will open Region 6C Playoff action Sunday, August 2. Waterville, the No. 3 seed from the 13-60 League, will host Arlington, the No. 7 seed from the River Valley League. Game time in Waterville will be 2 p.m. Morristown, the No. 7 seed, will play at No. 2 seed Minnesota Lake at 6 p.m. Sunday. Minn. Lake edged the Morries, 1-0, last weekend.

Waterville Indians fans were treated to gorgeous weather and a fantastic baseball game Sunday, July 12.
Waterville scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat Blue Earth, 10-9 in 13-60 League action.
The Indians, 2-1 overall, scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game at 8-all after the Pirates exploded for five seventh inning runs to take an 8-6 lead.
In the eighth inning, Nolan Grose led off with a line drive home run to right field.
