The Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners have decided to take over the rural emergency sirens in the county.
During the Tuesday, July 24 meeting the commissioners discussed results from a special meeting held July 17 among those interested in the emergency sirens.
There are nine rural sirens in the county, with one on Lake Washington, one on Lake Emily, one on Lexington, and three on German-Jefferson and three on Sakatah-Tetonka.
The Lake Washington Lakes Association did not request help with keeping their sirens operational.

According to an order filed in Le Sueur County Court on July 17, attorneys for LCHS have sought to restrict first amendment rights of those involved in the case. The proposed order filed by Attorney Raymond Konz, seeks to preclude the 16 plaintiffs in the case from disclosing “confidential” information between each other, puts limits on the media, and potentially other people in the public.

Hundreds of Bike MS: Ride Across Minnesota (formerly known as TRAM) peddled through the local area Wednesday morning, July 18, stopping for water in Waterville and enjoying a rest stop with snacks in Elysian. It was day three of the five-day, 300-mile trek.
The event raises funds to support breakthroughs in multiple sclerosis (MS) research and ensures people with MS have what they need to live their best lives.

An explosion and fire destroyed a vacant home in Montgomery early Tuesday morning.
 
The explosion occurred in the residence located at 104 3rd St. SW, across the street from Most Holy Redeemer Church. According to Police Chief Lou Sager and Fire Chief Ken Pavek, no one was injured.
 
Pavek said his crew was called to the scene around 2:15 a.m. He also called New Prague and Le Center for mutual aid.
 

In the fight against cancer, hundreds of Le Sueur County residents and their families and friends are raising awareness and funds for research, step by step. The Relay for Life of Le Sueur County is an active team fundraiser where people from all over the county, take turns walking around a track at the Le Sueur County Fairgrounds.
 

Le Sueur County’s 25th Relay for Life will be held this Friday, July 13 into the early hours of Saturday morning at the fairgrounds in Le Center with a 2 a.m. closing ceremony.
“This is the first year we won’t be going all night,” explained event co-chair Sara Slavik. “We used to go for 12 hours, until 6 a.m., but there were requests to shorten it. I think the earlier closing ceremony will make it easier for people.”

Specer Syvertson, a 22-year-old graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato, who lives in Paynesville, claimed the title in the 35th annual Elysian Rookie's Triathlon Saturday, July 7. Competing in this event for the first time, Syvertson edged previous champions Brett Lovaas and Mike Cahill for the overall championship. Bette Rowley of Burnsville won the women's division for the third time in the last four years. More than 120 individuals competed this year. Despite a heavy rain and some lightening just prior to the start of Elysian's Fourth of July parade, hundreds of people came out and celebrated Independence Day and enjoyed the activities in Elysian.

The veterans' gun salutes during North Morristown's 10 a.m. Fourth of July parade echoed thunder, Wednesday morning, as parade goers and parade participants braved gray skies and showers. The rain quit after about an hour and the celebration in full swing.

Ninety-six kids reeled in 122 fish during Elysian's Fourth of July kids' fishing contest on Saturday, June 30. The contest was held at the city beach along the shore of Lake Francis. Tristan Anderson, 12, of Eagle Lake caught the largest fish of the day, a 12'-3/4" bass.

A St. Clair teen sustained life-threatening injuries after being rear-ended by a distracted driver on Highway 60 near Madison Lake, Friday, June 29, just before 6 p.m.

A teenager drowned in Lake Elysian during the afteroon of June 29. 
According to the Waseca County Sheriff's report, the victim was a 17-year-old male who reportedly jumped in the lake and never resurfaced around 4 p.m. Elysian Fire Chief Jason James said the incident occurred just south of Kaupon's Point. 

The 2018 Elysian Princess of the Lakes was crowned Thursday, June 28 in Elysian as part of the 4th of July Celebration. Shelby Clinton, daughter of Beth and Matt Clinton, was named the Princess of the Lakes. Her attendants are Evelyn Miller, daughter of Brandis and John Miller and Lydia Coulsey, daughter of Becky Coulsey and Matt Coulsey. This was the 30th Princess of the Lakes pageant in Elysian. The congregation of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Elysian will celebrate the retirement of the mortgage on their new church on Sunday, June 24. The building, which was completed in 2007, is the third church for the parish. The festivities will begin with a noon Mass followed by a chicken dinner and the mortgage burning ceremony. Everyone is invited. “It is a real tribute to the parishioners of St. Andrew that they made the sacrifices necessary to build this magnificent church.

Alyssa Schwartz, daughter of Jeremy and Susan Schwartz, was crowned the 2018 Miss Waterville Friday, June 8. Her attendants are Morgan Nusbaum, daughter of Dave and Tammy Nusbaum, Hannah Petry, daughter of Todd and Amy Petry, and Kayleen Stangler, daughter of Jeff and Sue Stangler. Alyssa Schwartz also was named Miss Congeniality and Hannah Petry received the Talent Award for her gymnastics routine. Skylah Bahmer, daughter of Joseph and April Kalsheurer, was named Junior Miss.
