Members of the Waterville Fire Department, both active and retired, gave a tribute to retired fireman Lowell “Red” Quiram last week at his home in Waterville. Quiram was a member of the local fire department for 21 years from 1965 through 1986. He was diagnosed Dec. 1 with kidney, liver, lung, and brain cancer. Long-time Le Sueur County employee Darrell Pettis will be ending his more than 20+ year career with the county.
Pettis submitted his resignation Tuesday, Dec. 22 during the Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners Meeting. The board approved the resignation, which will take affect Jan. 22, 2021.
Pettis has been with the county for 21 years, starting as the county engineer from 1999 to 2009. From 2009 through 2017 he served as both the county engineer and administrator. From 2017 through the present he has been the county administrator.

MANKATO, Minn. – (3:30 p.m.) The Minnesota Department of Transportation has closed highways in southwestern Minnesota due to numerous crashes and zero visibility including Interstate 90 from the South Dakota Border to Blue Earth. The closures are now in effect and include the following counties:

Travis Van Houdt, 18, of Waterville has been identified as the victim of the fatal crash that occurred Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 5:56 a.m. near the intersection of 230th Street West and Iona Avenue in Morristown Township.
Van Houdt is the son of Henry and Julie Van Houdt of Waterville and was a senior at Waterville-Elysian-Morristown High School.
According to a press release prepared by Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn, Rice County deputies, Morristown Fire/Rescue, and North Ambulance were dispatched the personal injury crash.
The Waterville-Elysian-Morristown K-6th grade students will return to in-person learning starting Monday, Jan. 11.
The WEM Board of Education approved this plan during their regular Monday, Dec. 21 meeting. Due to the board holding a Monday meeting, they were able to move the start date forward a week from the date which Governor Tim Walz announced Dec. 16.
