Michael “Mick” Patrick McGuire, age 73, of Montgomery, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Mick was born September 7, 1952, in Le Sueur, Minnesota, to Michael E. and Eleanor (Weydert) McGuire. At age three, his family moved to Montgomery, a community he loved and faithfully served throughout his life. He graduated from Montgomery-Lonsdale High School in 1971 and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy from the University of Minnesota.
In 1971, Mick met the love of his life, Joni Novak, and together they shared 55 years of love, companionship, and adventure. An avid outdoorsman, Mick enjoyed camping, biking, hiking, canoeing, skiing, sailing, woodworking, and landscaping. In 1987, he co-founded McGuire Landscaping with his brother, Dan, and remained active in the business for nearly 40 years.
Mick was deeply devoted to Montgomery. He served as mayor and city council member for a combined 29 years, was named the 2023 Kolacky Days Grand Marshal, volunteered as a Montgomery Ambulance EMT for 30 years, and was active in numerous community organizations. He was especially proud of helping establish the Montgomery Community Foundation, serving as its president from 2018 until his death.
He is survived by his life partner, Joni Novak; brothers, Pat (Roxy) McGuire, Dan (Marina) McGuire, and Brian McGuire; sisters, Colleen (Ted) Wondra, Sue (Dave) Gregor, and Maureen (Jeff) Franek; stepmother, Ramona McGuire; the Novak family; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held from 4–7 p.m. Monday, August 24, 2026, at Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery. Private family burial will take place at St. Thomas Cemetery in Jessenland Township at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Montgomery Community Foundation.
