Gary M. Simon, 67

Gary M. Simon, age 67, of New Prague, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday, April 16, 2018 at his home.  Gary was born on July 6, 1950 in New Prague to Walter R. and Julia (Svoboda) Simon.  He was raised in the Veseli area and attended Most HolyTrinity Catholic School, graduated from New Prague High School, and attended Mankato State College before enlisting in the  National Guard.  He married Shirley A. Havlicek on August 21, 1971 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Veseli.  Gary worked as a laborer for FabCon in Savage for 46 years, never missing a day of work. He also held many part-time jobs throughout his life, one of which was as a seasonal employee at Ace Hardware.  Gary was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a past school board member for St. Wenceslaus School and was pivotal in getting playground equipment at the school.  Baseball was a favorite hobby and in addition to attending games, he served as a Little League coach when his boys were young.  He also loved fishing, deer hunting, cooking, and short weekend travel trips.  Gary’s gregarious personality made him a friend to all and a man who never had an unkind word to say about anyone.  His greatest joy in life came in being involved with and spending time with his grandchildren, no matter what the activity.

Gary is survived by his wife, Shirley of New Prague; children, Chad Simon of St. Peter, Jill (Kevin) Solheid of New Prague; Josh (Hannah) Simon of New Prague; grandchildren, Simon, Noah, & Trenton; siblings, Roger (Carole) Simon of Montgomery, Karen (Phil) Kallal of New Prague, Butch (Deb) Simon of Webster, Ken (Gertie) Simon of Burnsville, Judy Simon (Mike Fox) of Edmonds, WA, Joyce (Scott) Cassidy of New Prague, Tom (Amber) Simon of Maple Lake.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter & Julia; son, Marc Simon.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 20, 2018 at 10 AM at St. Wenceslaus Church with Father Kevin Clinton officiating.  Visitation will take place Thursday from 4-8 PM and Friday morning from 7:30-9:30 at Bruzek Funeral Home.  Burial will follow Mass at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.  Lunch will follow at the KC Hall.  bruzekfuneralhome.com
