Trojan girls have trouble closing close games

The New Prague Trojan girls basketball team opened its season with a pair of Thanksgiving weekend games at the Pat Paterson Invitational at Hamline University in St. Paul, and while the Trojans were competitive in both games, they lost down the stretch to Stillwater and White Bear Lake.

The Trojans returned to the court Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Shakopee, and will play Thursday, Nov. 30, at Farmington and Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Lakeville North. New Prague’s first home game will be Friday, Dec. 8, against Prior Lake.

Ponies 60, Trojans 56 New Prague and Stillwater faced off in a back-and-forth game Friday, Nov. 24, with the Trojans holding a two-point halftime lead. But Stillwater pulled away late in the second half, then withstood a Trojan comeback for a 60-56 win. “It was a highly competitive game,” said Trojan Coach Luke Swedberg. “We fell behind 49-41, but came back to make it a one-possession game. “We saw a lot of positive things happen,” he said. “Unfortunately, they made a few more plays than we did.” McKenzie Holgate led the Trojans with 15 points. Sophomores Amanda Giesen and Emily Russo both had 13 and Emily Schmitz had 11. Makayla Shimek added four points for New Prague. “We had a lot of nice contributions from different people, and we shot the ball pretty well. Emily Russo posted up and got 13 points. She had a lot of good touches and got to the free throw line. Amanda Giesen scored from both inside and out, and did a great job of shot selection.”

Bears 59, Trojans 51 Again, New Prague led at halftime, but couldn’t hold the lead, falling to White Bear Lake Saturday, Nov. 25. “We played good ball in the first half against a tough, physical team. White Bear has a team that can wear on you. You’re constantly taking a beating and that hurt us,” Swedberg said. “We just ran out of gas. Giesen led the Trojans with....
