Penny Wars surpasses goal

New Prague Middle School’s Penny Wars was victorious as it shattered past its $5,000 goal, raising $8,599. The funds raised by students will go to No Time for Poverty.

"It’s so amazing," said Sue Grundhoffer of the nonprofit organization. She was present at the Tuesday, March 12, presentation in the middle school’s gym.

The school’s student council held the fundraiser. Eighth grade teacher and council advisor Jeremy Kalal announced the three teams that raised the most out of the eight teams at the school. Raising the most was the Free Fallers with $3,500, second was the Black Diamonds with $2,400 and third was the Base Jumpers with $1,246.

Each team had a penny jug that they could put pennies in. Bragging rights would go to the team that had donated the most pennies. Opposing teams that put in other change or dollars would detract from that total, although all the funds donated went to the drive.

No Time for Poverty has a hospital in Haiti with the funds to help pay for hospital visits and medicine for children. It was quickly estimated the grand total will aid 3,439 children. Grundhoffer presented the school with a plaque.

This is the third year the school has held Penny Wars. Its first year it raised $4,200 and last year the total was $4,500.
