New Market duo combines for no-hitter over Montgomery

New Market picked up a pair of wins to go to 3-0 and climb into first place in the Dakota-Rice-Scott League standings, with Prior Lake (2-0) and Faribault (1-0) also undefeated.

Highlight of the week was a combined no-hitter by New Market’s Nate Rost and Derek Bergstrom as they defeated Montgomery 14-0 Sunday, May 7.

All teams have started league play except for St. Benedict, which has two games scheduled for the coming week. The Saints play at Webster Sunday, May 14, and at Shakopee Tuesday, May 16.

Muskies 12, Sox 2 New Market scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Webster 12-2. The score was 4-0 after six innings when Webster scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Gage Bergman had a leadoff single and scored on a double by Jack Meyer. Meyer came home when Hunter Solheid reached on an error. The Muskies teed off on Webster pitching in the bottom of the seventh. Scott Lyden, Nate Rost, Nick Rost, Tyler Bergstrom, Neil Engler and Kyle Henkemeyer had hits in the inning. Nate Rost had two doubles, Lyden had two hits and scored three runs, and Nick Rost and Bergstrom also had two hits each. Andy Henkemeyer pitched seven innings allowing four hits and striking out 10. Meyer pitched 5-2/3 innings and took the loss.

Muskies 14, Mallards 0 Nate Rost and Derek Bergstrom combined for a seven-inning no-hitter as New Market defeated Montgomery 14-0 Sunday. Rost pitched five perfect innings and struck out six. Bergstrom walked the first batter he faced, but then retired the next six. New Market took the lead with a 10-run third inning. Nine of the first 10 batters in the inning scored, with the only out recorded on a sacrifice bunt. The Muskies added two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. Rost was hit by pitches with the bases loaded twice in the third inning and responded with a two-run homer in his next at bat in the fifth. He also drove in a run with a single, giving him five RBIs for the day. Steve McGuiggan had two hits for New Market. Jaron Christensen and Jared Schloesser each pitched three innings for Montgomery.

Orioles 6, Bulldogs 1 New Prague took an early lead with a three-run third inning. Union Hill would scratch a run across in the sixth inning when Bryan Lindner scored on an error. The Orioles answered with a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Aaron Shetka had a big day with three hits, including a double and two RBIs. Justin Novak also had three hits, while Zack Dubanoski and Dan Shekta both scored twice. Russel Bartyzal picked up his first career DRS hit. Joel Zimmermann collected the win by pitching eight solid innings and Zach Sirek pitched a scoreless ninth. Jesse Bastyr, Dust Steinhoff, Teddy Nytes, Conrad Masberg, Cully Smith and Lindner had hits for Union Hill. Derek Masberg was the starting pitcher for Union Hill.

Sox 1, Coyotes 0 Webster got its first DRS win of the season on Sunday in a pitchers’ duel between Jeremy Wieland and Andy Lazzari. Wieland held the Coyotes to only three hits over nine innings while striking out six batters and walking none. JJ Stenzel came through for the Sox in the fifth inning with a line drive RBI single scoring Hunter Solheid from second base. That ended up the lone run of the game. Adam Neuger, Solheid and Stenzel recorded two hits each for the Sox. With the win Webster has already matched its win total for the past two seasons combined in DRS play.

Lakers 7, Warriors 1 Both Faribault and Veseli managed just four hits apiece, but Veseli walked 12 batters and had a few errors in the field, giving Faribault the advantage in a 7-1 win. Matt Lane and Jack Helgeson combined to strikeout 14 batters, with Lane taking the win for the Lakers, Curt Brezina took the loss. Joe Grote for Faribault had two hits and an RBI. Tyler Busch, Ben Doerr, Brezina and Mike Bartusek had hits for Veseli. Doerr led off the third with a double, but was left stranded on third. Bartusek’s base hit drove in Blake Radloff for Veseli’s only run in the fifth.

Express 6, Irish 0 Elko broke open a close game with four runs in the eighth inning to take a 6-0 win over St. Patrick Sunday at Bonin Field in St. Patrick. TJ Evanson had three hits for Elko, including a home run. Mitch Frederick, Ash Larsen and Garret Delitch had two each. Kyle Rhodus and Ryan Friedges had the only hits for St. Patrick. Tyler Brekke started and got the win for Elko, with Mike Mehlich and Dylan Thomas pitching in relief. Josh Simon started and took the loss, with Jacob Allen and Austin Isaacson pitching in relief.

Mudcats 6, Aces 1 Ben Morrison pitched seven innings of one-hit ball to pick up the win as the Prior Lake Mudcats defeated Lonsdale 6-1. Jake Schmidt pitched two innings of relief. The Mudcats were led by Jonny Houston and Jake Lehrer with two hits each. Joseph Sabal started and took the loss for Lonsdale, with Ben Lazzari pitching in relief. Lonsdale’s Isaac Pint had both his team’s hits.
